A Critical Analysis of “THE DUFF” Movie

Hello everyone. I am back again a little bit late and with a very non-bookish review of “THE DUFF” movie. So, this movie came out in the year 2015 and I was super, super pumped to watch the movie at that time But some how life happened and I ended up not watching it. Which was a great decision. So recently, I got Netflix subscription and I decided to binge watch all my favorite Rom-coms. And then I stumbled upon The Duff movie and I decided to give this movie a shot. And Man,oh Man!!!! Do I regret that decision……

First of all, The Duff by Kody Keplinger is one of my all time favorites contemporary romance young adult novel. In fact it was among the books which introduced me to the world of young adult genre so this book is definitely more closer to my heart.

So let’s dissect the way through which this movie has disappointed me.

  1. Was the presence of Bella Thorne really required in the movie???

The Obvious answer is NOOOO, it was not required. But the director thought why not add a self-obsessed pretty girl who likes to bully other to make this movie a typical high school teen cliche movie.

2. Was it necessary to make Bianca’s friend so shallow??

For me, her friend was okay BUT it was the character of Bianca that really, really annoying for me. She had zero respect for her friends and was always telling them that she can’t tell them anything and throughout the movie she literally does that. However, if you have read the book, then in that case you might be aware that Bianca do tell her friend most of the things if not all of them. And that fight between Bianca and her friends….could it get any worse than that. I mean seriously!!!!

And this leads me to my last and final thought and this thing bugged me THE MOST out of all of them.

3. The Character Development

Throughout the movie, I realized that in order to make this movie a perfect target for all those teen girls who love cliche romantic stories. I also love a GOOD romantic comedy but not the one where director and scriptwriter basically slathered a good book. So kudos to director and script writer

If you have read the book and if you haven’t I highly recommend you to read it. Bianca had much more worth mentioning issues in her life and Toby Tucker being her crush and trying to get him to acknowledge her was not among them. Her father was an alcoholic and her parents were divorcing. These circumstances forced her to have a relationship with Wesley.

All of these facts were blatantly ignored in the movie and a cliche prom story was inserted instead. And I am sacred for more ruined adaptations of some of the awesome books.

So the overall, this strengthen my belief that “BOOKS BEFORE MOVIES”.

And finally the rant is over :). Have you seen the movie?? and have also read the book?? Give me your two cents about this butchering of books by directors and script writers.

The Peer and The Puppet by B.B REID (A Review)

Release Date: 22 July,2018

Publisher: Bebe’s Read LLC

Genre: Romance, New adult, High School Romance, Young Adult, Contemporary

Borrow the bike. Win the race. Collect the cash. It should’ve been an easy job. Ran out of town with a broken leg and a lawsuit, my mother’s latest flame swoops in like a knight in gilded armor. Blackwood Keep is a place I don’t belong, and I’m not the only one who knows. To the boy across the hall, my savior’s only son, I’m a stray looking for a bone.

He’s lord of the manor.
King of the academy.
And number one on my shit list.

I have no intentions of becoming a happy family with the social climber and her wild daughter. A bottle of Jameson and a cracked skull gets my problem shipped to reform school, but I didn’t bank on her returning.

Four’s out to get even, and she almost had the perfect plan: expose the privileged kid moonlighting as a gangbanger. She’s smart, but she’ll have to be smarter. Sending her away won’t be good enough this time. I’m going to have to tame the little troublemaker. To the girl across the hall, the one without a name, I’m nothing without my silver spoon.

She’s lady of the trailer park.
Queen of the swamps.
And my new favorite pastime.

Four was a girl who was born in poverty yet was fearless and love to race. She grew up with her mom who is complicated through most part of story. In the opening chapter of the book we see Four riding a bike at a race and then an accident happen which forced her mom to move Four to her new lover’s house, where Four met with Ever, the son of the Four’s soon to be step father. It was an instant love/hate relationship between both of them. Have you read this story before??

This is the most reoccurring theme for most of the Young Adult High School novels. And I can count some of these on my fingertips. Now don’t get me wrong,I love a good romance novel with a good love/hate relationship between the leading character. But the thing that is most annoying for me was how messy this story was, I was reading and all of the sudden Four was in boarding school. I mean what?? when?? How??. And as soon as she was back we were introduced with Ever’s cousin with no background whatsoever.

The Plot was very weak mainly riding on Four and Ever’s sexual tension. There are also certain factors in the book that made me think that is this really the case with the youth of USA? For instance, What is a 17 year old boy (who is super rich) doing in a gang??? I mean why?? Was this really necessary for the angsty plot of the story ?

Don’t get me wrong. Ever can totally join a gang but what about a backstory. Also I do get that Four and Ever have a lot of sexual tension and chemistry but that doesn’t mean that Ever needs to be a possessive, controlling alpha male. Like a mini version on Mr. Christian Grey

Anyways, TBH I don’t think this was necessary. Ever’s personality completely ruined the book for me. All in all it was a 2.5 star read for me on average.Because there were literally parts in the book where I was completely lost. But the story behind Four’s name made me really sad.

Have you read this book?? If yes, What are your reviews?

My Top 5 All Time Favorite Fan fictions

We all love to read fan fictions yet at the same time are reluctant to accept this fact in front of others. Let’s admit it, fan fictions are our guilty pleasures.

So here is a list of my all time favorites fan fictions which I love to re-read again and again.

1. Isolation by Bex-Chan

Isolation is one of my all time favorite Dramione fanfiction. Dramione was a couple that I wanted to be happen so desperately. I mean, enemies turned lovers, who doesn’t like stories with this plot. And this is such a great fan fiction that it has 4.53 stars on goodreads with 128 reviews in total. I have also added link. Please do check this story out. Highly Recommended. Plus all the other stories by Bex-Chan are also great.

2. The Way Of The Wind by Just Enough

This is a Naruto fan fic guys. So there was a time when I was literally obsessed with Naruto and Sasuke/Sakura couple was all time favorite. Well because of the angst between them. I am not going to lie, I love some of the fan fictions because of angst. But this is not a sasu/saku fanfic, it’s Ita/saku fan fic. Also angst level in this fic are moderate, so if you are not a angst lover you’ll definitely love this. Only thing that I didn’t like about this fan fic was long flashbacks. Not a big fan of them.

3.Lured by Anashins

This is K-pop fanfiction. Yes, I am a k-popper and I love to watch K dramas and listen k pop. This was the fanfiction that forced me to make an account on asianfanfics.com. This is a Se hun fan fic. So if Se Hun is your exo bias then this is a must read for you. What I love most about this fic is Angst :). Also there is a lot of smut in this one ( explicit content warning β˜ΊπŸ˜€).

4. Attayear by Korekrypta

Another K-pop fanfiction. And this time it’s for those people whose bias is Baekhyun. Attayear is a angst filled time-traveling Sci-fi fan fiction. I have read this fic about a dozen times and I fell in love each time. KoreKrypta is my favourite author on asianfanfic site. There are fan fiction stories which are purely fan fic without any solid plot and with a lot of cringe fluffy moments. But for me the thing that matters most is the storyline. KoreKrypta stories are rich with storyline and her character her so strong. whether you read fan fiction or not, I would highly recommend Korekrypta stories.

5.Forgetting Park Chanyeol by Holdon & The Blood Brother Code by KoreKrypta

download (1)

We have a tie for top spot. It was difficult for me choose between these two stories beacuse both of them are awesome. Full of angst, drama and romance. As I have already stated previously that Korekrypta is my favorite author on asianfanfic. Holdon stories are also my favourite. Her plot twists are great and most of her chapters have a cliffhanger ending πŸ˜€. Forgetting Park Chanyeol might be my favorite out of these two because Chanyeol is my bias

tenor (1)

This was such a hard list for me to make because I have so many other stories that I wanted to add. Some of them are not complete or will never be completed. But all of the above listed stories are complete so you can binge read them and share your thoughts with me.

What are your favorite fan fictions?? Share them with me.Because sharing is caring 😏.

My July and August Book Haul

At the end of July, I visited Karachi and also visited urdu bazaar. Believe me it was literally a heaven for a bookworm like me. My sister and my cousin had to drag me from that place.

So naturally I bought a couple of books from that heavenly place and at a bargain price as well

1. The Dark Artifices by Cassandra Clare

I bought both of these books for only 600/- ( almost 6$) from a bookshop that were having a 70% off sale. When I saw these books, I thought I had won a lottery. Because believe me both of these books are about 1600 Rs. But there was only one downside, the second book of the series ( lords of shadows) is a little bit damaged. Which is totally fine with me as beggars can’t be choosers πŸ˜‚.

2. The Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy

The second that I got my hand on was the ministry of utmost happiness by Arundhati Roy. I have not read any book by this author previously and have heard a lot of good reviews about this. So Naturally I had to get my hands on this one. Have you read this one? What are you reviews?? Comment down below.

3. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

The 3rd book that I bought was Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. Now that the series is finally finished, I decided to jump on this bandwagon. Heard mixed review about this one. To be very honest, I think this book was a total cover buy for me.

4. I Am Thunder by Muhammad khan

Bought this books because of all these awesome reviews and I think this is my most anticipated reads.

What do you guys think about my book haul?? Which one should I start first?

P. S: All photographs are taken by me. You call also follow me on Instagram @maira.reads. ( Sorry for shameless promotion πŸ˜‚).

What I usually do when I don’t want to blog….

I wrote this title during the era when I was so motivated to start my own blog. Naturally this time period fell in to the time zone when I was knee deep in my thesis write up. So what actually happened was I started this mainly to procrastinate. If Iike I have this habit of getting stuck in 5-6 different task, when there is a task which need my dire attention. I mean really….

And I think it’s that time of the year again. There are millions of things around me but I need to procrastinate by reading books and writing there reviews

Not that reading and reviewing books is bad, it’s just my timings that usually suck. Any who now that the rant is over I guess you’ll see more of me over here (at least I hope so)

Tell me what you guys do to procrastinate???
